Concept of Intelligent Buildings

IT for Energy Efficient Building Design

Course Outline:

This course introduces various aspects of intelligent building design. The emphasis is on integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with building services systems. With its multidisciplinary approach, the course encourages the use of leading-edge design and technology to support the development of intelligent facilities into the next century whilst addressing business and environmental considerations. This course gives a broad overview of what has been existing in a modern intelligent building and what is being developed by researchers in the areas of architectural science and engineering, electrical and mechanical services in buildings, and intelligent buildings. The 4 day intensive programme explores the complex balance of intelligent building elements, and includes the introduction to the latest IT tools used in designing and implementing intelligent controls, needs of building occupiers, the internal environment, energy usage, and cost effectiveness.

Topics Covered:

•Introduction to Intelligent Buildings

•Definitions of intelligent buildings

•Building automation and controls

•Various AI techniques such as Expert systems, Genetic Algorithms, Artificial Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, and their applications in Intelligent Buildings especially for HVAC, Electrical, Fire, vertical Transportation, security and safety systems and Energy Management and Design

•Use of IT tools for Illumination design and HVAC load calculations

•Best-Practices Guide for Evaluating Intelligent Building Technologies

•Life Cycle Cost Optimization

•Visit to the building automation lab in IIIT for various demos

Tools used: Ecotect, Radiance, EnergyPlus, GenOpt, LCCOB, Fire Dynamics Simulation.

Prerequisites:

Good understanding of various services in buildings especially illumination and HVAC. Familiarity with CAD and Office applications. Familiarity with AI techniques, basic electronics is not essential but will be helpful.

Course Outline:

One of the biggest challenges in front of architects is to control the energy consumption in buildings. IT assisted approach for designing energy efficient buildings  facilitates a much more accurate estimation of energy consumption in any building. Besides, use of IT tools also provides facility for evaluation of practically unlimited number of options and picking out the best one. Further, IT can also be used to control the operation of energy intensive devices and services for optimum operating conditions. This course covers various aspects of energy efficient building design using an infusion of IT into conventional practices. With its multidisciplinary approach, the course encourages the use of leading-edge design and technology to support the development of energy efficient buildings keeping in mind the key issues for decision making. The 4 day intensive programme covers  deliberations related to energy efficiency in buildings including, simulation tools to assist estimation of energy efficiency, sizing and design of passive architectural concepts and cost effectiveness.

The course covers the following topics:

• Buildings parameters affecting energy efficiency

• Role and selection of energy efficient equipment

• Thermal simulation of buildings for load calculation and design of building envelope

• Simulation of daylighting and artificial lighting

• Energy and environmental analysis of buildings leading to evaluation standards such as LEED

• Life Cycle Cost Optimization

• Tools: Ecotect, Radiance, EnergyPlus, GenOpt, LCCOB.

Prerequisites:

Good understanding of various services in buildings especially illumination and HVAC. Familiarity with CAD and Office applications.

About IIIT

Faculty

The International Institute of Information Technology (formerly Indian Institute of Information Technology ), Hyderabad is an autonomous, self-supporting institution started in 1998 with seed support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. A major goal of IIIT is to impart a uniquely broad and interdisciplinary IT education of the highest academic quality. This is achieved through an integrated curriculum that consists of a highly diverse set of IT courses, interdisciplinary IT research projects, day-to-day interaction with industry, preparation in entrepreneurship and personality development courses. The Institute offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral level programmes in IT, Electronics and Communications, and applications of IT in various domains.

The Institute is carrying out advanced Research and Development in Information and Software Technologies and their societal, scientific, industrial and financial applications. This is achieved by having research centres such as:

Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC)
Centre for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology
Centre for Data Engineering
Centre for Visual Information Technology
IIIT Robotics
Laboratory
Centre for IT in Building Science
Earthquake Engineering Research Centre
Communications Research Centre
Bioinformatics Research Centre
Power Systems Research Centre

About Centre for Building Science (CBS)
