Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures

Intelligent Buildings

During past 15 years India has witnessed 6 moderate earthquakes causing around 40,000 casualties and innumerable property loss. According to latest seismic code, IS: 1893: 2002, more than 60% of India is prone to earthquakes. Metropolitan cities like Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad etc., lie in zone III or above. Due to increase in land cost these days, many multistoried structures are being constructed, however, without considering earthquake forces. This may result in serious problems to our economy in the event of earthquake. In this short-course, we will discuss how to design an earthquake resistant structure with little to no increase in the cost.

This course introduces to various aspects of intelligent building design. With its multi-disciplinary approach, the course encourages the use of leading-edge design and technology to support the development of intelligent facilities into the next century whilst addressing business and environmental considerations. The 5 days intensive programme explores the complex balance of intelligent building elements, and includes the latest IT tools used in designing and implementing intelligent controls, needs of building occupiers, the internal environment, energy usage, and cost effectiveness.
