:: Mobile phone as a universal remote for home automation ::

Introduction ::

The rapidly advancing technology and the reducing cost is increasing the usage of remote controlled devices in home automation systems. These devices use various media (such as IR, RF, and Wire) and protocols (such as BACnet, LonTalk and X10) for communication. Instead of using several remotes a composite universal remote with different communication protocols and medium would be desirable. Another alternative is a gateway which supports different protocols and media and connects to a simple remote. Mobile phone comes out to be a suitable candidate for the simple remote because of its widespread use, possibility of individual settings, display, buttons, and wireless communication. A prototype demonstration implemented at IT in building science that has a gateway centric mobile based home automation system. Gateway acts as a multiple protocol transceiver which receives the commands from mobile phone via Bluetooth and transmits the commands to different devices via different protocols and different media.
