:: Multiple film based daylight control ::

Introduction ::

Windows bring light, warmth, and beauty into buildings and give a feeling of openness and space to living areas. Window in a building provides daylight, ventilation and the outside view. A well designed fenestration system usually provides sufficient daylight during the day but there is a problem of glare and heat. Usual glare control strategies deploy blinds or curtains which are not automated and require frequent manual intervention. Moreover, these systems block the outside view when they are controlling the excess daylight. Emerging technologies such as electroc haromic windows satisfy the purposes of glare protection and clarity of outside view but are very expensive. The implemented system consists of multiple films on two rollers with dimmable lamps. This system can control the amount of daylight entering the building, prevent glare, keep the view intact, and is low cost.

Overall System Architecture ::

The system consists of four or more sheets of varying transmittivity, joined with each other at ends forming a long film and rolled over a roller. The other end of the long film passes through the windows and is attached to another roller parallel to the first roller. By rolling both the rollers the system can bring different types of film on the window thus controlling the amount of daylight entering into the space. If illumination inside is less than the setpoint, the system can operate dimmable CFLs and top up the required light. The system works on the principle of feedback control, which records the changes in light intensity with the help of lux sensor and accordingly adjusts the film-position as well as the dimmer. A user interface has been provided on mobile phone, using which user can set the comfort value of light intensity and also user can switch on/off motor & dimmer by using mobile phone as a remote.
